First swim after the operation

I didn’t drown or need fishing out, so it’s a win!

Getting back in the pool after wrist surgery felt a bit like meeting an old friend you haven’t seen in a while, familiar, reassuring, but with a slight “let’s see how this goes” nervousness.

I have roughly 80–90% range of motion in my wrist now. Most movements feel fine, but getting a bit over confident and pushing past those last few degrees reminds me in no uncertain terms that I’m still healing.

So today’s session was all about being sensible (not my usual training approach!), steady, and listening to what my body had to say… even if it wasn’t always what I wanted to hear.

I kept things simple, with a mix of kickboard lengths, a couple of fist‑drill lengths to keep the pressure off the wrist, and some gentle full‑stroke swimming to test how everything held up.

The good news? It went well. A few twinges here and there, but nothing too severe and keeping the intervals short meant I could give the wrist plenty of rest.

I was aiming for around 800m, but it felt surprisingly easily, and I ended up finishing at 1km. Nothing too excessive, just a nice steady session to re-open my gills and restock my chlorine levels!

It was fantastic to be back in the water again and even better feeling that the Swimathon 5k is still within reach. A cracking confidence boost which is is just what was needed and and so now its time to start building back up, while being careful not to overdo it.

One swim down… and more to come.
